hiked timp, more to come later

It's a 7 mile hike to the peak and at mile 5.5 I may have had a small panic attack. Or a large one I'm not sure. Anyway the trail was covered with snow. So you kind of had to find your own way. So we started up and I got to a point where I didn't feel like I could go forward or backward and I thought for sure I was going to slide to my death. But somehow I got control and made it to the saddle.

From the saddle it's less than 1 mile to the peak where the little shack his, but I think Wes knew I was ready to go so he said this was close enough for him. I feel bad now b/c he's never been to the top, but I was really nervous about how I was going to get down.

So total we hiked 12 miles. It took us 3 hours to get up and 2.5 to get back down. It was fun times, but I don't think I will hike it again until end of August when the snow is probably gone.

You must've done more than just the cave if you hiked 12 miles! Holy crud...is that the WHOLE peak? WOW...I'm impressed! :)

Hey Rad, yeah we hiked to timp summit...well kinda. I got a little or a lot freak out when we had to cross some snow so we stopped at the saddle. It's only 1 more mile to the peak from there. So if we'd done the whole thing it would be 14 miles round trip.

I'm impressed! I've always wanted to do that, but I get scared with that stuff too...maybe I'll wait 'till Labor day!

I'm nervous to do it now, seriously! Maybe I should reconsider doing it until September...

How did you get ahead of me on the mileage board? Oh well. I'm glad you didn't get pulmonary edema.

From Merri on Thu, Jul 16, 2009 at 13:09:59 from 67.104.0.92

Burt I think I was close, very very close.

Lani it might not be a bad idea to wait a little longer unless you have walking poles and are not a wuss like me.

I've never really looked at the mileage board, but that's really cool.

From Burt on Thu, Jul 16, 2009 at 13:34:59 from 68.76.197.194

Yeah. That is cool, isn't it?

I would've been freaked out too! I think it's incredible you got as far as you did!

We try to keep the mileage board a secret. Now that you know it is there you will try and run more each day! It is like a disease! Not like any that Burt might have living in Arizona! Much worse! jk Burt

Great job on Timp. I have TONS of experience in the mountains and on snow and will confirm that you made the right decision. Always go with your gut feelings and you'll stay safe. Snow crossings can be tricky. With experience they become less frightening, but you still have to be careful. Great job on a fun hike. I did Timp last year (the whole ridge) for my first time and I now plan to run it a few times this year. It is such a beautiful peak.
